As Lucas, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana saw their spot-kicks saved by Willy Caballero in the League Cup final, one question was on everyone’s lips.
Why wasn’t Daniel Sturridge taking one of Liverpool’s penalties?
The England striker might have only scored one penalty in his Reds career – a clincher in the 5-0 Premier League win over Swansea in 2013 – but it was still surprising not to see him step up.
Manager Jurgen Klopp has explained all, however, while confirming James Milner – rather than Sturridge – had been due to take penalty number five if required.

JK: "There was no chance [for a Sturridge penalty] he had cramps. Everyone who was available took one." #LFC

We’re not convinced Klopp’s comments will sit too well with former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher, who has made his feelings known with regards to the choice of takers.
But the manager seems satisfied that those best-placed to score from the spot were those who stepped up.
