He had no right to score this one.
Behold, Kevin Doyle in full flight.
The Irish striker is still grinding away for Colorado Rapids in MLS and still making his contributions count.
Rapids went top of the Western Conference last night with a 2-1 win over San Jose. Doyle got both goals.
With the game tied at 0-0, 37 minutes in, Doyle’s instincts kicked in. Marc Burch had the ball on the left wing but the former Reading frontman was five yards outside the box when he made his run.
He got ahead of his marker but it looked as if the cross would evade him. No flipping chance as Doyle propelled himself forward and was still able to get his forehead under the ball so it would loop over the San Jose goalkeeper.
The goal was a piece of art and, fittingly, set the commentators off on one.
We can’t say as much for Doyle’s attempted knee slide celebration…
San Jose got back in it but when Rapids were awarded a penalty, Doyle stepped up and slotted it home to deliver three massive points to his side.
33 years young, is Doyle. Could he be the sprightly replacement for Robbie Keane in the Irish team?
