Spain’s Primera Divisón has agreed a deal to live stream regular matches on Facebook.
The governing body for Spain’s top flight and second division has already started to show free broadcasts of La Liga matches on Friday nights and this will continue until the end of the current season and almost certainly beyond this point.
Last Friday’s game between Granada and Real Betis, which the home side won 4-1, was the first match to be streamed on La Liga’s official Facebook page.
“This is a commitment to innovation, framed within the strategy of digital development of La Liga, with the goal that all fans of Spanish football can enjoy the league,” an official statement read.
La Liga chiefs hope that by being one of the first football leagues to embrace new digital platforms such as Facebook Live, they will be in a position to challenge the dominance of the Premier League.
There are currently just three more Friday night La Liga fixtures remaining this season, although The Drum write that more matches could be moved to a Friday night next season, paving the way for even more Facebook Live broadcasts.
The game between Las Palmas and Real Soceidad will be the next to be streamed on La Liga’s Facebook page on Friday February 24.
