Daniel Sturridge is not expected to miss too much preparation time after picking up an injury on Tuesday night.
Sturridge pulled up after scoring a stunning goal against Bayern Munich in Liverpool’s Audi Cup victory over the Bundesliga giants at the Allianz Arena.
The Reds forward was forced to limp off just moments after finding the net, however, meaning he got just 20 minutes of game-time.
A statement on Liverpool’s official website (below) has announced that Sturridge will miss Wednesday’s preseason game with Atletico Madrid but the club expects the 27-year-old to be back in action after that particular match.
“Daniel Sturridge will miss Liverpool’s Audi Cup final encounter with Atletico Madrid at the Allianz Arena tonight.
“The striker was substituted as a precautionary measure having sustained a thigh injury when scoring in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Bayern Munich.
“Sturridge will be treated at the club’s training base in Rottach-Egern today and the issue will continue to be monitored, although there are currently no plans for a scan to take place in Germany.
“As it stands, the No.15 is not ruled out of any further matches beyond this evening’s.”
Supporters felt that the incident summed up Sturridge’s time as a Liverpool player – one moment of brilliance followed by injury – but everyone hoped that it was not serious because he certainly doesn’t deserve another injury-plagued season.
Manager Jurgen Klopp had previously claimed that he’d never seen Sturridge so fit.
“It’s the best condition since I’m here,” Klopp recently told ESPN. “OK, I came in October 2015 and Daniel, I think, was probably injured. Last preseason was after a tournament and a short break.
“This year he has had a proper break and is in a good physical shape absolutely.”
