Jurgen Klopp may be about to make his second permanent signing of the January transfer window, according to reports in Spain.
The Liverpool manager has already brought in Marko Grujic (who has since been loaned back to Red Star Belgrade) and Steven Caulker (on loan), and now Russian winger Denis Cheryshev could be about to join from Real Madrid.
According to Cadena COPE, Rafa Benitez’s departure means the 25-year-old is now free to move, though Liverpool could face competition from Villarreal.
Cheryshev spent last season on loan with El Submarino Amarillo, but Liverpool are thought to be front-runners for his signature.
Fans in England might know Cheryshev best for his part in the Copa Del Rey faux pas that saw Madrid expelled from the competition.
The winger played against Cadiz when he should have been serving a suspension for yellow cards picked up during his Villarreal stint.
But now it seems Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is ready to let Cheryshev move on.
Zidane: "Cheyshev could leave (to England) as it is important for him to play. We'll see tomorrow. I wish him the best."
