Manchester City face injury crisis ahead of Sunday’s derby after two defensive injuries

Calling for back-up

Kevin Beirne

Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi are doubts for Sunday’s Manchester derby after the pair sustained injuries during their team’s Champions League second leg on Tuesday night.

The Manchester City captain was limped off the field just five minutes into the game as his side carried at 3-1 advantage into the game against Dynamo Kiev, while Otamendi was taken off less than 20 minutes later.

The duo were replaced by Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis respectively, but it is the manner of their injuries which will worry City fans.

Kompany picked up the apparent hamstring injury as he slipped trying to clear the ball, and while it’s not clear how serious this most recent one is, it means he will likely miss Sunday’s game at the Etihad.

Otamendi, meanwhile, played on after he appeared to injure his thigh in a collision with Vitaliy Buyalskiy, but called for trainers just a few minutes later and was replaced.

City currently sit four points above their cross-town rivals, but have struggled for form as of late. The loss of their captain is another blow as the Premier League title is surely out of reach at this stage.
