Manchester United returned to Champions League action with a 3-0 victory against Swiss champions, FC Basel, on Tuesday night.
Having last played in the competition at the back end of 2015, United fans will have been delighted to see their team back in the continent’s premier cup competition.
However, as was noted by many watching the game on television, there were plenty of empty seats at Old Trafford as the game kicked off.
Although heavy traffic in the area around the stadium was partly to blame for this and many of the seats that were empty at kick off were soon taken, it was still clear that Old Trafford was far from sold out.
Having long been teased by United supporters about their own club’s inability to sell out their own stadium, Manchester City fans were quick to pick up on this, many of them tweeting about it:
Thousands on empty seats at Old Trafford tonight but remember it won't be picked up on as it doesn't fit the #narrative
