Mathieu Debuchy’s early injury against Bournemouth is peak Arsenal

It was inevitable.

Arsenal had turned a corner, they said.

This season was different, they said.

We obviously forgot about the November curse. Thankfully the Gunners came through for us.

An injury to Héctor Bellerín, coupled with Carl Jenkinson being Carl Jenkinson, meant a first Premier League start in over a year for Mathieu ‘oh yeah, he’s still at Arsenal’ Debuchy.

Debuchy might have only signed for the club in 2014, but for many he’s a relic of The Old Arsenal.

A defender who might have been good once, but no one can really remember as he’s missed so much game-time through injury.

The French international’s 22 games in an Arsenal shirt sounds low, but at the same time it’s a struggle for non-fans to remember more than a couple of his appearances.

He made a bright start, but if you were to guess the outcome of his long-awaited return, you might go with ‘injured inside 15 minutes’. And you’d be right.

It was shocking news that absolutely no one expected.

The phrase ‘peak Arsenal’ is overused these days, almost to the point that it is now devoid of all meaning, but we’re going to stick with it. And we’re not alone.
