Newcastle miss out on Brazilian left-back due to work permit complications

They have had a quiet summer, but they almost had a deal wrapped up for a new left-back

It’s been a frustrating window for Newcastle fans

Newcastle have endured a tough transfer window. Mike Ashley has been typically tight with his spending, relying on Rafa Benitez’s heroics to keep the club in the top flight with limited resources for the second consecutive season.

They haven’t been completely inactive though – they have brought in Federico Fernandez and Ki Sung-Yueng from Swansea, Yoshinori Mutō from Mainz, Salomón Rondón from West Brom and Fabian Schär from Deportivo La Coruña.

However, thre has been a notable lack of spending from the board which will only lead to fans becoming more disgruntled, however much faith they have in Benitez.

The Magpies did almost have another signing in the bag though, only for work permit complications to scupper it at the last hurdle.

Newcastle reportedly had a deal agreed with Monaco for the signing of Brazilian left-back Jorge, but there was not enough time in the window remaining for the club to sort out his work permit.

The defender is not in Leonardo Jardim’s plans for the season and will likely go out on loan to somewhere outside the Premier League for the season after the window closed this afternoon for Premier League clubs.

Newcastle were also close to signing Stanley N’Soki from Paris Saint-Germain, but after an impressive performance in the Trophée des Champions fixture, Thomas Tuchel is keen to keep him at the Parc des Princes.
