Flyweights beware.
Mackenzie Dern has definitely found the right weight class for her and it’s come at no better time, with the formation of the UFC’s 125lbs division on the horizon.
Dern continues to be touted as one of the most promising prospects in all of MMA and she continued her demolition streak on Friday night, when she squeezed the life out of opponent Mandy Polk at LFA 24.
The ground game of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt is well known but she displayed some solid power in her hands when she dropped Polk early in the first round and once Dern gets her hands on an opponent, the end is usually near.

Dern seamlessly transitioned to Polk’s back and sunk in a crunching rear naked choke which forced the veteran flyweight to tap, bringing Dern’s professional MMA record to 4-0.
The only blemishes on the 24-year-old’s career thus far have been her issues making weight at her previous home of strawweight but, given her success in her flyweight debut, don’t expect to see Dern return to 115lbs any time soon.
The UFC’s first female flyweight champion will be crowned after the current season of The Ultimate Fighter and strawweight queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk continues to hint at her desire to move up in weight to claim a second world title.

And with one of the most accomplished ground fighters in the world now competing at 125lbs, expect the UFC to come calling for Dern sooner rather than later.
