Aston Villa fans are already preparing themselves for the horror of relegation the Championship.
But former Villa defender Paul McGrath has warned supporters not to get too comfortable in England’s second-tier because he reckons they’re destined for life in League One.
The Republic of Ireland legend is a long-time critic of the way that chairman Randy Lerner is running the club and sounds certain that bottom-of-the-table Villa are set for back-to-back relegations, with no hope of returning to the top flight.
“Americans don’t know what Villa means to Villa fans,” McGrath told The Daily Mirror. “You need people who love the club. I have always loved Aston Villa and it is because the way the fans have treated me.
“If there are not people who love the club then it is going to downhill anyway.
“We are going to be second division next year, probably third division after and we are not going to come back.”
