People actually believe the Champions League draw was fixed in favour of Leicester City

This is worrying...

Simon Lloyd

Remember that time when almost everyone loved Leicester City?

You should do. It was only a few months ago.

Pretty much every football fan in the world – with the exception of Spurs and Arsenal supporters – were willing Claudio Ranieri’s men on to a title success that nobody saw coming.

Having lifted the Premier League last May, Leicester sealed their place in the Champions League.

With the draw for its group stages taking place in Monaco on Thursday, it’s fair to say that The Foxes came out of it pretty well. They will be in Group G when the competiton starts in September, along with 2004 winners FC Porto, Belgium’s Club Brugge and Copehagen of Denmark.

Leciester were entered into the draw as one of its top seeds – allowing them to avoid the likes of Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. This is due to a relatively new rule that was introduced by Uefa last year. It states that winners of Europe’s top seven associations will be placed directly into pot one. The other space is reserved for the Champions League winners. Previously, the top eight seeds were determined by the coefficients of the competing clubs.

Clearly unaware of the change in rules, many suggested that the draw had been ‘fixed’ in favour of Leicester – clearly not everyone’s second favourite team anymore…
