Depending on who you speak to, Mark Clattenburg’s Champions League trophy tattoo is either the most embarrassing thing ever or proof of the referee’s box office credentials.
No one is a bigger fan of Mark Clattenburg than Mark Clattenburg, and the divisive official has an extra detail on his new ink that we hadn’t spotted originally.
Thankfully, some Twitter sleuths have been on-hand to point it out. And it really is something else.

Clattenburg cares about just two things in the world. Being the best damned referee out there, and respecting international copyright law. Would you see [that referee who you like and you think is really great] doing that? Exactly.
You may have noticed that the photo above contains a second tattoo, separate from the Champions League one. Well he was hardly going to neglect the biggest stage of all, was he?
20 years down the line, it may be the case that the only people who remember that underwhelming Euro 2016 final are Clattenburg, Éder and that one guy who always beats your pub quiz team all by himself. But Clatts is never going to forget about it. No way, no how.
We’ve seen better tattoos in football – Alberto Moreno’s masterpiece springs to mind – and similarly specific ones like Mauricio Pinilla commemorating his shot against the crossbar during the last World Cup. But few will have the same attention-to-detail. And quite frankly we’d be more than a little worried if they did.
