Bless his beautiful shiny head.
You’ll no doubt have heard a lot of talk about coefficients regarding European football of late. That’s because Italy’s Serie A were dangerously close to nabbing one of the Premier League’s extra Champions League places.
Italian clubs performing well in both the European Cup and Europa League in recent years, allied with English sides flopping of late meant that this season was a golden chance for our Mediterranean cousins to make our ‘top four’ a top three.
But Bayern Munich’s dramatic 4-2 comeback against Juventus after extra-time on Wednesday ensures that they’ll be no Italian teams in the quarter-finals. Man City have of course already qualified for the last eight, and so until season 2017/18 at least, our allocations remains at a quartet.
Thank you Pep, we owe you one…
