Rafa Benitez’s decision to speak about his time at Real Madrid may have cost him millions

Fact?

He must’ve been dying to get that off his chest.

Rafa Benitez appeared on BT Sports’ coverage of Roma v Real Madrid earlier this week, and got a lot off his chest.

The former Madrid manager criticised the role of club president Florentino Perez, saying: “It’s not easy to be the manager there. As soon as something is wrong, or they think – the chairman thinks – that something is wrong, you start having problems.”

“My assistant Fabio Pecchia was saying that you have a permanent presence with the chairman (Perez). He’s around, he’s stuck in with the players, he’s stuck in with the press so he’s always around. It’s not easy for a manager.”

Benitez also compared the club’s structure, and ethos, unfavourably to great rivals Barcelona.

However, the former Liverpool manager’s candidness may have cost him millions in compensation.

According to El Economista, Benitez is due to continue receiving compensation from the club until June 30, but his openness on BT Sports may have broke the rules of a confidentiality agreement.

The Spanish media outlet claim that Benitez’s contract was worth €4million per season, and he is now at risk of losing five months money.
