Real Madrid defender Marcelo is giving away a Champions League winner’s medal

Surely this can't be true?

Simon Lloyd

Bloody hell, football.

Already in 2016, we’ve been sickened at the sight of a bunch of actors posing as AC Milan players and performing a special moisturiser-promoting pre-match haka. We’ve also seen Manchester United paint a couple of their mascots fucking *blue* to mark the launch of a new X Men film.

Just when you thought you couldn’t shake your head at the sorry state of the modern game any more, along comes Marcelo.

The Brazilian was part of the Real Madrid side that sealed the club’s eleventh European Cup in Milan on Saturday – just two years after winning his first winner’s medal in Lisbon a couple of years ago.

Within a matter of days, he’s offering to part company with a Champions League medal in exchange for… wait for it… a few shares of a post on Facebook.

The 28-year-old has asked his fans to share the post and their memories of a time they’ve come first with him. His favourite will win the medal along with a pair of adidas X16 football boots.

We’re not convinced that this is his actual winner’s medal, but in a week where Pele announced he was auctioning off all of his footballing memorabilia and medals, perhaps it’s not out of the realms of possibility.

He’s fortunate enough to have another one we suppose.
