Given their lacklustre start to the season, news of Brendan Rodgers’ departure from Anfield won’t have surprised too many.
But not even 12 hours after the Northern Irishman’s exit was announced, reports were suggesting that one of their star players was also set to leave the club.
Philippe Coutinho’s name has already been linked with Barcelona on a number of occasions throughout the early weeks of the season. Now, with the club axing their manager, the rumour is circulating again.
This time the reports are coming from SPORT, the Barcelona-based newspaper, who claim that Coutinho could be the subject of a €30m (just over £22m) bid from Spain as early as January.
Even though Liverpool’s start to the season has been below the standard expected by their manager, it’s unlikely any incoming manager would be willing to let the Brazilian international leave Anfield so soon into his tenure.
If the new manager fails to steer Liverpool back into the Champions League, persuading Coutinho to remain on Merseyside may become very complicated.
