Robbie Williams denied Danish football fans one of the biggest games in their 2003 calendar

Imagine this happening over here?

JOE

Let us level with you.

We might have described it as ‘one of the biggest games in Danish football’ in our headline when, in actual fact, we were only talking about Denmark’s Community Shield equivalent.

Still, people on these shores would be up in arms if the Football Season Curtain-Raiserâ„¢ was postponed for a Robbie Williams gig – which is exactly what happened over there back in 2003. Worse still, a new date for the game between league champions FC Copenhagen and cup winners Brondby was never agreed.

How do we know this? The internet, of course. More specifically this website, flagged up by the below tweet from Alex Stewart.

Robbie Williams’ Escapology tour took him to Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium in July of 2003, where the game would have been played had it not been for his concert.

Because neither team turned up and Robbie Williams did, we’d like to imagine the former Take That member was awarded a 3-0 victory – much in the same way Scotland benefitted from Estonia not turning up to that World Cup qualifier in Tallin all those years ago.

The news reaches us days after Williams delighted an adoring fan by stopping to pose for a picture with him. That fan turned out to be Real Madrid’s World Cup-winning midfielder, Toni Kroos, who clearly held no grudge that the Danish Super Cup final of 2003 fell victim to the man standing next to him.
