If this were last week, we admit that we’d have been all over the “oh how Manchester United could do with him now” narrative.
But the 3-3 draw with Newcastle on Tuesday night proved that there are goals in Louis van Gaal’s side, with Wayne Rooney finding the net twice in a game for the first time in over a year.
And his former strike partner did the same less than 24 hours later as Robin van Persie scored two gorgeous goals during Fenerbahce’s 6-1 drubbing of Giresunspor in the Turkey Cup.
His first arrived on the hour mark when Gokhan Gonul teed the Dutchman up to confidently fire the ball over the head of a defender on the line.

And the former Arsenal man rounded out the scoring in the 82nd minute when he showed the composure of a striker with over 100 international caps as he sold a defender with a dummy before taking the ball around the goalkeeper and calmly slotting home.
