Neville’s getting carried away
After Roy Keane’s reaction to Ollie Watkins’ late winner went viral last night, his comments curtailing Gary Neville’s excitement ahead of the final have also made the headlines.
The pair were in the studio providing analysis on England’s semi-final clash against the Netherlands which England won in euphoric style as substitute Ollie Watkins netted a 90th minute winner.
Earlier, Neville had praised England’s performance but slammed the referee’s decision to award Gareth Southgate’s side a penalty which led to them equalising after falling behind in the 7th minute.
As the game looked as though it was heading to extra-time, substitutes Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins combined to seal a place in the final on Sunday against Spain.
The studio erupted with the pundits launching into wild celebrations, all except former Irish international Keane who was unmoved by the late winner.
As the pair looked ahead to Sunday’s final, Neville accepted that Spain have been ‘brilliant’ but got carried away, dreaming of what could be for England.
“Spain were fifth or sixth favourites coming into this tournament. Not many people fancied them, I didn’t fancy them.”
He went on to say that Spain have been the best team in the tournament ‘by a country mile’. “They’ve been brilliant all the way through,” the ex-United defender gushed.
“We’ve got our work cut out on Sunday. But as Roy said, it feels like something is happening. Sometimes you feel like it’s your name on the trophy. We’re not saying that here.”
Keane jumped in quickly to curb Neville’s excitement saying: “Careful there!”
However, he soon began to give a little bit of hope back to England fans as Neville went on to say that Spain were a far better team, to which Keane responded: “But the best teams don’t always win the tournaments, that’s what football and sport is about.”
England will now face Spain at 8pm in the historic Olympiastadion in Berlin.
