‘My reaction should not be that’

Sergio Ramos has apologised for losing his cool with one of his teammates in training.

Footage shared on Twitter shows how young defender Sergio Reguilón accidentally catches the Real Madrid captain in the face with his elbow as he tries to catch a ball during Monday’s session. Ramos reacts angrily, attempting to kick the ball at the 21-year-old. As the players walk away, the Spanish international continues to make his feeling known to Reguilón, kicking the ball at him a second time before Luka Modric intervenes.

A tweet later posted by Ramos played down the situation, but made it clear that his reaction was inexcusable.

‘Although it may not seem like it, they are quite common situations,’ it said, ‘but it is not an excuse, my reaction should not have been that.’

‘We always go full, right, Regui? In the end team victory together.’

Reguilon soon replied from his own account: ‘I always support my team and my captain. Let’s go after the victory tomorrow!’

The European champions host Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night with manager Julen Lopetegui under mounting pressure.

Lopetegui only replaced Zinedine Zidane as Real boss in July, news of his appointment prompting the Spanish football federation to sack him as manager of the national team on the eve of the World Cup finals.

Since taking charge he’s overseen a miserable spell at the Bernabeu, the weekend loss to Levante their third on the trot. The only crumb of comfort from their 2-1 defeat was that Marcelo’s consolation goal brought to an end the club’s longest ever run without scoring, totalling 482 minutes.

Before the Brazilian wing-back struck against Levante, Real’s last goal in any competition came in a 1-0 win against Espanyol a month ago, with them failing to score in games against Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, CSKA Moscow and Alaves.
