Saturday was a bad day all round for everyone involved at Southampton.
The Saints are in a bit of limbo at the moment.
Currently in ninth position in the Premier League on 40 points, they won’t get relegated and they won’t get Europe.
Their season will pretty much peter out.
Shane Long has not had the best of seasons for the south coast club.
The Republic of Ireland striker has only managed five goals in all competitions for the Saints – three in the Premier League, one in the FA Cup and one in the EFL Cup.
Many of his appearances this season have come as a substitute, and it doesn’t seem like he has the confidence of Claude Puel.
Long made another appearance from the bench in Southampton’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at St. Mary’s.
The 30-year-old came on for James Ward-Prowse after 60 minutes, after Vincent Kompany had put the away side ahead.

However, rather bizarrely, Long was then taken off after 82 minutes.
He only had 22 minutes on the pitch.
As you could imagine, the Irish striker was not one bit happy about this. There was an intense staredown with the Southampton coaching staff as he exited the pitch.

Long only signed a four-year contract last year but after this latest incident, we wonder if the 30-year-old will be lining out for the Saints next season.
