Southampton have just won April Fools’ Day with new club crest

Well, we hope this is an April Fools’ joke anyway.

Southampton have unveiled the new club crest to come into effect from the 2016/17 season and beyond and it is definitely different, that’s for sure.

The Saints are moving with the times and that old football at the top of their classic badge has been done away with and about time too. Why a football anyway? Instead, they’ve gone with an emoji.

An emoji with a halo no less.

The Premier League club made the official announcement on their website on Friday morning stating that it was time to part with their 20-year-old crest.

“After meeting with focus groups on a number of occasions over the last 12 months, the club has created a more modernised crest that continues to symbolise the city and its surrounding areas, while acknowledging more modern trends,” the statement read.

“We pride ourselves on being a progressive and forward-thinking club”
