Spanish fans are asking David de Gea to be dropped

Spanish fans have voiced their disapproval of David de Gea staying in the Spanish Euro 2016 squad.

The Spanish goalkeeper was the subject of a report in Spanish outlet El Diario that claimed a court had been told that he, and former U21 teammate Iker Muniain, had been implicated in a case of sexual assault.

Rumours circulated that he had been sent home from Spain’s Euro 2016 base but those suggestions proved false and de Gea met the media later on Friday, following a press conference in Ile de Re.

Now, Spanish fans have voiced their unhappiness with the decision to keep de Gea in the squad and are asking for him to be dropped.

Nearly two-thirds of Spanish fans have voted in a MARCA poll asking for de Gea to not take part in any Spain games at Euro 2016. MARCA is reporting 54% of Spain fans think de Gea should be dropped in dropped in favour of Iker Casillas.

The poll is a marked contrast to the 72% of fans who believed de Gea should start Spain’s games prior to the news of this court case on Friday.

Since the reports on the court case were made on Friday 10 June, de Gea has insisted the allegations were false, saying to AS.com, I want to deny it. It’s a lie and it’s false. Nothing more.”

At time of writing, there has been no team news regarding who will start Spain’s Euro 2016 opener against the Czech Republic on Monday 13 June.
