Stuart Lancaster has stepped down from his role as England coach.
Lancaster was appointed to the role when Martin Johnson was dismissed after a disappointing 2011 Rugby World Cup, and he now suffers the same fate as his predecessor.
England were knocked out of this year’s World Cup after just three games. It was the first time in the history of the Rugby World Cup that the English team failed to reach the knock-out rounds. They were also the first main host to fail to get out of their group.
During his time in the job, Lancaster led England to four consecutive Six Nations finishes, losing the last three on points difference. But a record of just 28 wins from 46 games – including two from four at the World Cup – combined with the pressure of the Sam Burgess fiasco mean that Lancaster has finally left his position.
