Sunderland v Tottenham – Player Ratings

Tom Victor

Sunderland

Pantilimon 6

Didn’t have much to do over the 90 minutes, and tried his best with the goal

Jones – 6

Restricted Spurs’ wide men  and showed intent coming forward

O’Shea – 6

Did well to keep Kane quiet for the most part

during the Barclays Premier League match between Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light on September 13, 2015 in Sunderland, United Kingdom.

Kaboul – 7

Probably his best performance in a Sunderland shirt. Impressive going forward and rarely troubled by his former team-mates

Van Aanholt – 5

Played Mason onside for the winner and lucky not to concede a penalty early on.

M’Vila – 6

Felt a little isolated against Mason and Dier at times

Gomez – 5

Offered little, after being stymied by Sunderland’s uncharacteristically attacking line-up

Lens – 7

Linked midfield and attack well – his energy and skill should be an asset

lens

Toivonen – 6

Worked tirelessly but might need another week or two to show what he can offer

Borini – 5

Took a while to get going and retreated into his shell a little after being caught by Mason

Defoe – 6

Showed good movement but missed a golden chance to give Sunderland a first-half lead

Substitutes

Cattermole, Watmore and Rodwell – N/A

None were on the pitch for that long. Rodwell came closest to an impact, hitting the bar, but Spurs’ changes made more of an impact.

Tottenham

Lloris – 6

A quiet afternoon for the Frenchman

Walker – 6

Adventurous in attack and far from his worst game defensively

Alderweireld – 6

Coped reasonably against a top-heavy Sunderland side

Vertonghen – 6

Some early scares but was fairly comfortable

vert

Davies – 5

Offered Sunderland’s frontmen too much space, but wasn’t offered much help by team-mates

Dier – 7

Really growing into his new midfield role

Mason – 7

Took his goal excellently, but was fortunate to get away with an earlier studs-up challenge on Borini

Son – 6

A quiet debut for the big-money signing but he showed some promise

Alli – 7

Continues to justify his inclusion in the first team – has slotted in seamlessly since returning from loan

alli

Chadli – 5

Almost anonymous at times; will need to up his game with more competition for places.

Kane – 5

Failed to push on after impressing for England – still a way off last season’s form

Substitutes

Townsend – 5

Showed little to suggest he’ll get a starting place all that soon

Lamela – 6

Brilliant pass created the winning goal, and he’ll hope it proves to be a turning point in his Spurs career

Carroll – N/A

Not enough time to make an impression
