David Lingmerth must think this Open lark is a piece of cake.
The 27-year-old golfer had only played in two majors before teeing off at St Andrews, but seven birdies in the first nine holes put him within reach for the best ever opening round in the tournament’s history.
That record was set by Rory McIlroy, who recorded a nine under par 63 in 2010.
David Lingmerth 4 under through 4 holes. The last person to start a round of golf this well was Kim Jong-il. #TheOpen

Incredibly it is not only Lingmerth’s first Open, but his first time ever playing at the iconic Scottish course.
McIlroy won the Open last year, but is unable to defend his title after suffering a footballing injury.
There are a handful of interesting pairings, including Tiger Woods teeing off with fellow former champ Louis Oosthuizen.
