17 golds, 18 silver and 18 bronze
Team GB has reached over a half-century of Olympic medals at Tokyo 2020, with gold-medal performances in cycling, as well as podium finishes in the women’s pole vault and hockey.
On Friday, Laura Kenny won the fifth gold medal of her career, taking the Olympic title in the women’s cycling madison. She is the first British woman to win gold at three consecutive games.
Britain has now won 53 medals and is fourth on the table, with 17 gold, behind China, the US, and hosts, Japan.
Matt Walls took home Britain’s first gold medal in the velodrome on Thursday with an utterly dominant display in his first games’ appearance.
That was some ride from @wallsey_98. Total domination to win the omnium.

Not too long after that, the pride of Preston and all-around top northerner, Holly Bradshaw, finally earned herself an Olympic medal, taking the bronze in the women’s pole vault.
The 29-year-old has appeared in nine major global championships, usually ending with narrow disappointment. Bradshaw flew over the opening height of 4.50 metres at the first attempt and confidently mastered 4.70m in the second.
That bronze medal clearance. 🤩
Bravo, @HollyBradshawPV

But the medals didn’t stop there. On Thursday night, Team GB’s women’s hockey team won the bronze with a 4-3 win over India. Though things got off to a slow start, drawing 0-0 in the first quarter, things started flying, and soon it was 3-2.
After a deflected cross gave them a fourth, it was enough to see them over the line in a truly thrilling match and bring home yet another medal for Great Britain – the 53rd, to be precise. Just look at what it meant.
These celebrations…
