The greatest smash and grab story in the history of Fantasy Football

Tony Cuddihy

Anyone who thought there was no drama involved in Manchester United versus Bournemouth had better read this.

The story on the final day of the Premier League story was as unlikely as Leicester winning it in real life, via Trinity College student Robert Lynch.

“At the start of the Premier League season, like most males, we set up a fantasy football league. We all agreed on a fiver in, but the pride is what we really coveted,” he writes.

“With approximately 6 weeks left in the season the leader used an excellent bench boost to score 125 points (the overall top score for the week was 126 points I believe).

“At that stage I was third in the league and gave up all hope of winning, focusing my attention on catching the guy in second. What was to unfold was a story which would rival Leicester’s.

“I chipped away little by little and found myself 7 points points behind the guy in first after last Sunday’s round of games and with just United vs Bournemouth left to play. I had Rashford on my bench who was in line to play thanks to Payet’s absence.

“The leader (Wicklow U21 football captain David “Boots” Boothman) had Chris Smalling. I needed Rashford to outscore Smalling by 8 points to take the ultimate title (the 12 person Trinity GAA League).

“Rashford got one and went off, with bonus points eluding him thanks to the efforts of the United defence. I was studying for my last exam and congratulated Boots.

“With Rashford gone off, no chance of bonus points, and Smalling obtaining a clean sheet, it seemed the dream was over. When news came through of Smalling’s 93rd minute O.G. it took me a while to realise the gravity of the situation.

“I was back in it.

“When it became apparent that I was now one point behind with the bonus points still to be awarded, study went out the window.

“After over an hour of refreshing the page Rashford was awarded the two bonus points and the greatest smash and grab in Fantasy Football history became reality.”

Robert also sent us these screenshots of the aftermath.
