On April 27, 2014, Steven Gerrard slipped.
As you’ll probably remember, Â it proved quite costly.
In doing so, he surrendered possession of a football to Demba Ba, presenting the then-Chelsea player with a clean run at Liverpool’s goal. Ba slotted the ball beyond Simon Mignolet, setting Chelsea on their way to a 2-0 victory.
The defeat to Chelsea ended an 11-game winning streak for Liverpool which had seen them look near certain to end their long wait for a league title. It also handed initiative back to eventual champions Manchester City, a side Liverpool had beaten only a matter of weeks before.
Gerrard had blown his best chance of leading his team to league glory, a point which supporters of rival clubs have been all too happy to remind him of in the time since.
Thursday is the third anniversary of Gerrard’s slip, a date that appears to have been renamed as ‘Slip Day’ by a group of Everton supporters. Although this particular band of Evertonians are probably not the only people in the world who will refer to April 27 of this, it appears they are the only ones to have prepared a special cake to mark the occasion.
As the below tweet shows, The Everton Forum have gone to the trouble of creating a slipping Stevie G – with arse crack showing, for some reason – in the icing on the cake. Along with this, the message ‘Happy Slip Day’ is visible and, just to make sure nobody else tries to pass off the cake as their own, a special ‘TEF’ logo.
Slip Day tomorrow. Hope everyone has a good one this year. Goodwill to all men especially those who don't fall over or indeed slip. pic.twitter.com/8Rn9Cr4FLs
