Real Madrid meet city rivals Atletico Madrid in Tallinn
Thibaut Courtois will reportedly miss Real Madrid’s European Super Cup against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
The Belgian international completed his £35m move to the Bernabeu from Chelsea last week and was expected to make his debut for the European champions in the game in Estonia. However, it now appears the goalkeeper will have to wait to make his bow for his new club. Cadena COPE claim Real failed to register him with Uefa, meaning the 26-year-old will be watching the game from the stands.
Courtois trained with his new teammates in the Lillekuela Stadium on Tuesday, but it’s thought that Keylor Navas – the man he is expected to replace as Real’s number one – will start the game. If this proves to be the case, it’s likely Courtois’ debut will be pushed back to Sunday, when Real host Getafe in La Liga.
Courtois’ move to Real has not gone down well with many supporters of Atletico, who he spent three years on loan with before replacing Petr Cech as the first choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge in 2014. Since the transfer was confirmed, Atleti fans on Twitter have been quick to remind the ‘keeper of his old comments about his new club. As well as this, a plaque featuring his name was vandalised outside the club’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
