Few people will have predicted the outcome of the Tyson Fury fight or at least the manner in which he was to beat reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko.
The 27-year-old Brit overcame the weight of history, overturned the bookies’ odds and defied the Ukrainian’s decade-long stranglehold on the heavyweight division to secure a memorable unanimous victory in Germany.
While thousands of fans were amazed at the emphatic nature of Fury’s win, there was probably one boxing coach who was feeling a wee bit smug.
Steve Egan was one of the people that saw it coming – and he saw it coming a mile off. When 10 years off, to be precise.
Egan made a bold prediction about his young charge back in the days he was just a promising amateur in 2006.
When his fighter was just an up-and-coming teenager Egan set out what Fury’s CV might look like and it included this prediction:Â “2016: Undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. You will be. By that time you will be. It’s just about being patient.”
If we’re being picky he was about a month out, but it’s pretty impressive.
The whole video makes for interesting viewing, but skip to 5:08 if you’re just after the predictions.
