This ridiculous stat shows Rafa Benitez’s impact at Real Madrid

Tom Victor

Real Madrid, more than any other club in world football, are known for their free-flowing attacking football.

This was most prominent in the Galacticos era, but the club still has a wealth of attacking and creative talent including Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco and Luka Modric.

Even without stars like Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez for their trip to face Paris Saint-Germain, you’d expect a free-flowing game against opponents who could call upon the likes of former Madrid star Angel Di Maria.

But that’s not accounting for Rafa Benitez, master of the drab draw, and the Spaniard helped bring to an end a very long-standing record.

After just one goalless draw domestically or in Europe in the whole of last season (in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid), Benitez has already achieved the feat three times since taking over this summer.

You have to go all the way back to 2008 just to find the last time Madrid failed to score in a Champions League group-stage game, when a team including the likes of Royston Drenthe, Wesley Sneijder and Ruud van Nistelrooy lost 2-0 at home to Juventus.

The Spanish side won 33 of the 40 group games since, scoring more than 100 goals in the process, before drawing a blank in Paris.
