UFC 207’s Cody Garbrandt reveals what he eats the night before a fight

Could this end up being a champion's diet?

Cody Garbrandt is in with a title shot on Friday as he takes on UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz in Nevada.

It is a maiden title fight for the 25-year-old American, who is putting his undefeated professional MMA record (10-0; 5-0 UFC) on the line against Cruz (17-1; 5-0 UFC).

In the past, we have brought you the lowdown on top fighters’ pre-fight preparations, with UFC Embedded detailing the diets of Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz ahead of their UFC 202 bout in August.

And now Garbrandt has shed some light on his own rituals, including the food he consumes the night before a fight.

“What we eat today, we use tomorrow,” Garbrandt told GQ.

“So after the weigh-ins I do my rehydration and then I do a dinner of salmon, spinach, and sweet potatoes. Sushi, too. Some rice, some carbs. Some sodium to help hold your foot in.

“I’ve been eating that since probably my second pro fight.”

It’s a slightly different story when it comes to the Ohio native’s activity after each of his victories, however, with Garbrandt admitting he has “the biggest sweet tooth”.

“Usually after a fight I get Pop-Tarts and cereal,” he adds.

“I like eating like crap for two days and then get back into the gym. But I’ll snack on some Twix or some s’mores.”

Cody Garbrandt v Dominick Cruz is one of the highlights of the last UFC card of 2016, which is headlined by the women’s bantamweight title fight between Amanda Nunes and the returning Ronda Rousey.

There is another tasty-looking men’s bantamweight bout lower down the card, with former champ TJ Dillashaw taking on #2 ranked John Lineker, who is coming off a six-fight winning streak.
