Back of the net!

Jonathan PearceĀ came over all Alan Partridge during the BBC’s coverage of Leicester City vs Tottenham HotspurĀ in the third round of theĀ FA Cup on Wednesday night.

As well as his trademark facts and observations, the commentator seemed a little befuddled with the modern world as he shared the gantry with Kevin Kilbane.

Whilst waxing lyrical about players of yore such as Leicester’sĀ Hugh McIlmoyle and Spurs’ Cliff Jones, Pearce lamented, “Wonderful footballers…I know they’re not on the games machines that the youth of today play, Kevin I’m told, but great legends of the sport…”

Then, whilst talking about how the King Power Stadium “literally rocks”, the old-timey commentator referred toĀ Claudio Ranieri lovingĀ his “heavy rock…or his prog rock…what do they call it these days? I dunno…”

“You don’t know what prog rock was, do you?” he then questionedĀ Kilbane, who offered up the name of KasabianĀ to bring the conversation back into the 21st century.

Pearce continued regardless, “…The youngsters out there saying ‘Prog rock? What’s that all about? Bobby Smith? Who’s he?’ – here’s Kane!”

Knowing us, the viewing public, knowing you Jonathan Pearce – AHAAA!
