This is really happening
England secured their place in the semi-finals of this World Cup with minimal fuss on Saturday afternoon as they beat Sweden 2-0, keeping their first clean sheet of the tournament.
Sweden did not offer much going forward, but regardless of how kind the draw has been to England, nobody quite expected this. Young England fans have no memory of England ever being this good or getting this far in a major tournament. And thus, nobody knows how to react. It’s quite surreal.
While chants of ‘It’s Coming Home’ ring around every pub in the country, people jump through bus shelters and large quantities of beer are consumed, the BBC pundits can’t help but get excited too.
On Saturday evening, former England captain Alan Shearer tweeted a video from the BBC pundits’ dinner, in which Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and himself sing the infectiously catchy ‘It’s Coming Home’ hook.
It’s near impossible to watch without bringing a smile to your face – the joy that has spread nationwide thanks to this young, energised England team is unprecedented and we’re enjoying every moment.

The party continued, as did the singing, as Shearer then belted some Lionel Ritchie into a breadstick. Football can do funny things to you.
