Rod Salka did his best to make a political statement in his fight with Francisco Vargas on Thursday.
The American turned out with the message ‘America 1st’ emblazoned on his shorts, which, according to TMZ, also drew inspiration from Donald Trump’s plans to build a wall along the Mexican border.
Sadly for Salka, he couldn’t keep his Mexican opponent’s punches out – ironic – with Vargas winning the bout by TKO at the end of the sixth round.

Salka had landed plenty of punches up to that point of the fight, which headlined a Golden Boy card at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. Despite this, the 35-year-old rarely appeared to trouble Vargas.
Salka had been floored in round five when he was on the receiving end of a combination to the body and a right uppercut from Vargas. Having beaten the referee’s count on this occasion, his corner stepped in to bring the fight to a close when he started to take on more blows in the next round.
Ah well.
