Watch this baffling own goal from Aston Villa’s Jores Okore against League 2 Luton

Aston Villa’s leaky defence from last season is as permeable as ever.

Prior to kick-off in Villa’s EFL Cup clash with Luton Town, Villa’s new owner revealed that his five-year plan for the club involved them becoming the top side in Europe by 2021.

That, on the surface, seemed a pretty out-there statement.

And that’s before you look closely at where they are right now.

Arsenal v Aston Villa - Premier League

Having invested in a Champions League winning manager, many expected Villa to look an entirely new team but, based on Wednesday night’s evidence, they’re still the same old Villa.

A Jordan Ayew goal in the 13th minute suggested an easy night’s work for Roberto Di Matteo but that wasn’t accounting for defending like this.

Luton clawed their way into a 2-1 lead and earned a corner in the 67th minute.

A comedy of errors saw Villa fail to clear their lines and defender Jores Okore finally had enough with the scramble and decided to get his side back to the centre circle.

What’s the quickest way back to the centre circle?

Passing the ball into one’s own net, of course.

We can’t really criticise certain Villa fans for reacting the way they did – after all, what are you supposed to do when something like this happens?
