Bellator champion packs on outrageous amount of weight following weigh-in

An average of 2.5 lbs an hour.

Michael Chandler is on course to be the size of a middleweight when he defends his lightweight belt against Benson Henderson on Saturday night.

Chandler is set for his first defence of the strap in his second stint as the promotion’s 155 lb king when he takes on former UFC champion Benson Henderson at Bellator 165 at the SAP Center in San Jose.

The 33-year-old won back the strap, which was vacant after Will Brooks made the switch to the UFC, by brutally knocking out Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire in the first round of their co-main event bout at Bellator 157: Dynamite 2 in June. Interestingly, Henderson enters into this bout off the back of a second round TKO victory over Patricky’s younger brother Patricio at Bellator UFC 160 in August.

The weigh-ins went down last night with both competitors coming in on weight. Henderson tipped the scales at 154.9 lb while Chandler weighed in at 155 lb even.

However, 10 hours after the weigh-ins, Chandler uploaded a video of himself hitting the scales again at an incredible 180 lbs. Unless the phone he was holding, his wrist band, socks and boxers are all the heaviest of their kind known to man, this amount of weight gain in such a short amount of time is absolutely outrageous.

Chandler’s first reign as Bellator lightweight champ began in November 2011. He claimed the belt by submitting Eddie Alvarez in the fourth round at Bellator 58 in a bout that is widely considered to be one of the all-time greatest fights.

He went on to defend the belt twice before losing it to the Underground King in the rematch at Bellator 106 via split decision.
