Den Haag fans showering opposition supporters with toys will restore your faith in humanity

Beautiful gesture

Ben Kiely

The most beautiful football moment of the year happened in Rotterdam at the weekend.

And it had hardly anything to do with the beautiful game.

Feyenoord defeated Den Haag 3-1 at De Kuip on Sunday afternoon. Former Liverpool man Dirk Kuyt scored the opener  for the home side and celebrated with the increasingly popular “dab” celebration. It was a strange sight to see a 36-year-old wheel out that move, but it was nowhere near the main talking point of the game.

Prior to kick-off, patients from Sophia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam, the oldest hospital in the Netherlands, walked out onto the pitch with the teams. After receiving a warm welcome, they went up to the stands with some of the hospital’s staff members and watched their team get the win.

However, the travelling supporters ensured that this would be a day the visitors from the hospital would never forget with their incredibly touching gesture during the match.

The Den Haag faithful were encouraged to bring soft toys to throw at the kids during the game and they did not let the side down.

Early in the first half, they began showering them with hundreds of stuffed toys from the away section overhead. The Feyenoord supporters who were sitting in the section below the children rose from their seats, turned their backs to the game and showed their appreciation for the away support by giving them a standing ovation.

*Sniff, sniff*

I think there’s something in my eye.
