England winger Chris Ashton could be in big trouble again after alleged bite

Yet more controversy for Ashton.

Chris Ashton just can’t help himself.

The Saracens winger has courted controversy throughout his career, which has often detracted from his obvious talent.

Back in the spring, Ashton watched from home during England’s triumphant Six Nations campaign after receiving a 10-week ban for an eye gouge on Ulster and Ireland centre Luke Marshall.

You might think that missing out on being part of a Grand Slam-winning team would be enough encouragement for someone to get their act together, but the Saracens winger could well be staring down the barrel of another lengthy ban after footage emerged of Ashton seemingly trying to take a chunk out of Northampton prop Alex Waller.

With his mouth.

It’s not exactly clear that a bite takes place from the only angle available so far, but Waller was convinced he had been bitten and told the referee as much. If it is proven to be the case, Ashton can expect another ban.

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall admitted his winger could well be cited for the incident:

“I have heard the accusation. I haven’t seen the incident,” he said after the game.

“These things will run its course. I suppose there is a good chance Chris will be cited as a result so we will see what happens.”

Despite the incident, reigning Premiership champions Saracens won the game 27-12 to move level with Bath at the top of the table on 14 points after three games.
