Harry Redknapp may not like being referred to as a “wheeler dealer”, but stories like this only confirm his nickname.
The former Spurs manager was on BT Sport show Fleth & Sav on Saturday talking about his extensive experience of the January transfer window.
Redknapp said it’s difficult to find good value during the window, recalling the time he somehow sold former Portsmouth striker Benjani to Man City for a whopping £9.5m.
Back in the 2007/2008 Premier League season, Benjani was in excellent form for Portsmouth, scoring 12 goals in 27 games.
But when City made their interest known for the then 29-year-old, Redknapp couldn’t refuse the money on offer.
The only problem was convincing Benjani to leave. “I had to shove him out of the door,” Redknapp said.
“I had to shove him out of the door!” @Redknapp sold Benjani – but he didn’t want to go! #FletchAndSav https://t.co/lk4DDtQxpp
