So there you have it. Sweden, not four-time winners Italy, will be at next summer’s World Cup in Russia.
After taking a slender 1-0 first leg victory to Milan on Monday night, Janne Andersson’s side’s defence did not buckle, the game finishing goalless.
Inevitably, most of the fallout from the game will probably be about Italy’s failure to qualify or the fact Gianluigi Buffon may have now played his final game for his country, but for Sweden’s players, this was a wonderful achievement.
As the San Siro emptied, the Swedish players continued to celebrate on the pitch before their own supporters.
As the video below shows, the players then saw fit to take their celebrations over to the touchline, where a pitch-side broadcast was in full flow. Despite the best efforts of the poor technician bloke in a red vest, the make-shift desk didn’t stand much of a chance…
