Conor McGregor has said for some time that claiming three UFC belts was within the realms of possibility.
“I like the sound of that 170lbs title as well,” McGregor said at the beginning of 2016. “I feel I can take down three gold belts. And I feel I can do it by the year’s end.”
That’s definitely not going to happen before Auld Lang Syne rings out around the Mac Mansion but who’s to say that ‘The Notorious’ doesn’t make a run at the welterweight title down the line?
McGregor has the chance to become the lightweight champion when he meets Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 at the weekend, a feat which would be unprecedented as no fighter in UFC history has held a title in two different weight divisions simultaneously.
Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who defends his 170lbs strap against Stephen Thompson in the card’s co-main event, has dismissed McGregor’s chances of successfully competing against a legitimate welterweight.
“Well first off I think Conor is a smart individual and he knows that fighting me is not going to be good for his health,” Woodley told BJPenn.com last month.
But the goings-on at the official UFC 205 weigh-ins would suggest otherwise as there was a tense exchange between the fighters.

As both men stepped off the scales, having successfully made weight, there was an odd encounter in which the pair appeared to front up to one another.
It was documented by MMA Mad reporter Dale Jordan and the footage shows McGregor clearly say something to ‘The Chosen One’ after staring intently at the welterweight champ.
‘The Notorious’ certainly wasn’t trying to make friends with Woodley, that much is clear.
