West Ham’s Winston Reid got sent off in a preseason friendly

The referee did not appreciate that

We’re sure Slaven Bilic will be having a word with one of his side’s leaders.

Winston Reid was captain for West Ham’s 3-3 preseason meeting with Altona 93 in Hamburg on Tuesday evening.

The German side went ahead three times, only to be pegged back on each occasion by the Hammers in a thrilling game which saw Javier Hernandez make his club debut at the Adolf-Jager Kampfbahn stadium.

Chicharito could not get on the scoresheet, however, and the Premier League outfit had to rely on Toni Martinez and Andre Ayew and a Joshua Du Preez own goal to turn a defeat into a draw.

You don’t often see red cards dished out in friendly games but defender Winston Reid proved an exception to that trend as he was given his marching orders just seconds before the half-time whistle blew.

Having already been booked earlier in the first half, shortly after Altona’s Dennis Thiessen’s opener, Reid sarcastically applauded the referee after a foul was awarded against him following a West Ham corner kick.

Reid was making his return from shin surgery in the game and reportedly remains the subject of interest from Everton, who are understood to be preparing a £9 million bid for the 29-year-old.

Whether Reid stays or goes, maybe he should be reminded that it’s silly to clap in the face of an official when you’re already in his notebook.

Just sayin’.
