Why Gary Lineker’s Match of the Day pants appearance cost his son money

Lineker Jnr was trying to make some cash off the stunt

The return of the new Premier League season was all well and good.

But the real anticipation of fans up and down the country was not to see what formation the new manager would pick, whether the new star signing would score on his debut, or how the team would fare in a new division.

No, the big question on everybody’s lips was whether Gary Lineker would follow through on his promise to present Match of the Day in his undies – which he said he would if his beloved Leicester City won the title.

They delivered… and so did Gary. Sort of. (Though some viewers did quibble as to whether his garment of choice were pants or shorts).

But it turns out that Gary’s pants actually cost his own son £90, after it emerged George Lineker had placed a £50 bet on the undies being blue.

Gary’s white knickers meant George lost out on his £90 winnings. And he was not happy.

Better luck next time, George.

Meanwhile Lineker Snr responded to claims that he was wearing shorts, rather than pants. He wrote on Twitter:

“Had a few complaints saying I should’ve worn pants not boxers. My tweet said undies. Boxers are undies. That was embarrassing enough thanks.”

And that’s probably fair enough.
