World number one Novak Djokovic has suffered a shock defeat to American Sam Querrey in the third round of Wimbledon 2016.
Djokovic, who was on course for a calendar year Grand Slam, lost in a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), four set game after rain momentarily suspended play.
It was Novak’s first defeat since the 2015 French Open, and has blown open the tourament to other competitors.
Describing his upset to the BBC, 28 year old, and current world number 41, Sam Querrey said “It’s incredible, especially to do it here at Wimbledon.”
“I’m so ecstatic, so happy. I played the break points well and every time he had a break point I was able to come up with a big serve.
“He came out and got the first four games, fortunately for me we had another rain delay and I got to regroup. I’m just taking it one round at a time, I’m not even sure who I’m playing next.”
The shock loss now hands the impetus to Andy Murray win the tournament. On Saturday Murray completed a 3-6 5-7 2-6  straight sets win over Australian John Millman to gain passage to the fourth round. Now reunited with coach Ivan Lendl, who led the Scotsman to first Wimbledon title in 2013, the British number one is a heavy favourite to win a second title.
