Stranger things have happened…
If, in June 2015, Wes Morgan had been talking about he thought Leicester City could be Premier League champions, we would have all laughed very loudly at him. But look how things panned out.
Well, let’s not all laugh at Xherdan Shaqiri right now then. Speaking to The Sun today, the Swiss winger says that he thinks Stoke City could top the league next year, or at least qualify for the Champions League.
“I’m trying to get the club to the top as leader. But I also want to play for titles again and be in the Champions League,” he told the newspaper. “We were up and down as a team this season. Now we want to attack again in the summer. The board must strengthen – other clubs will also be doing it. Can Stoke do a Leicester? Yes, I think this is possible.”
Shaqiri has tasted such heights before. He won the Swiss Super League three times with Basel, and has both two Budesliga medals and a Champions League medal from his time at Bayern Munich. But of course, the Swiss Super League isn’t quite the English Premeir League, and Stoke are not quite Bayern Munich.
Then again, stranger things have happened. Feel free to dig this article up in May 2018 and laugh at our short-sightedness.
