In a game of several golazos, Angel di Maria’s wonder-strike might well have been the pick of the bunch.
While it mattered little in the overall scheme of things, Di Maria equalised shortly before half-time in Argentina’s Round of 16 defeat to France on Saturday afternoon with one of the truest hits of a football you’re ever going to see.
The Argentine winger made space for himself outside the box and belted a shot beyond Hugo Lloris before sprinting away in ecstasy.
Di Maria let his emotions get the better of him with something of a rude celebration as he reminded those in attendance at the Kazan Arena that he was one for the big occasions.
“Mine are this big, they’re this big,” Di Maria shouted as he motioned towards his genitals, according to a report in MARCA.
Argentina took the lead after the break but that sparked an incredible spell from France, who scored three unanswered goals in 11 minutes to give them a healthy lead.
A late Sergio Aguero goal was not enough to inspire Argentina to find another equaliser, however, and the game finished 4-3, making France the first team to nail down a place in the quarter-finals.
Les Bleus will face Uruguay in the next round, which gets underway on Friday in the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
