This Dimitri Payet wondergoal is so good you’ll want to watch it again and again

Goal of the tournament already

Kevin Beirne

Simply put, Dimitri Payet is a freak of nature.

English fans know just how brilliant the midfielder has been playing over the last few months since he joined West Ham over the summer and became the main man in all of our fantasy teams.

The 29-year-old has finally gotten his chance at international level, having drifted through much of his career on the fringes of the national team.

As France struggled their way through the opening game of Euro 2016 against Romania, Payet was the shining light throughout.

France v Romania - Group A: UEFA Euro 2016

A few eyebrows were raised when Paul Pogba was removed from the play for Anthony Martial. But anyone who was watching the game would have seen that the Juventus midfielder couldn’t hold a candle to Payet on the day.

Despite Olivier Giroud’s opening goal, a Bogdan Stancu penalty had equalised things for Romania who held firm and looked to be on the verge of an important point against the hosts.

As the clock was about to tick over into injury time, Payet – who had consistently caused danger for the resolute Romanian defence with his expertly-placed crosses – stepped up and took things into his own hands (or feet).

Nothing we can write will accurately sum of the beauty of what happened next as the Frenchman curled a finish from outside the box off his left foot and into the top corner. Just watch it for yourself. Then watch it again. You deserve it.
